Desi Eggs vs Regular Eggs: Why What We Feed Our Hens Changes Everything
Why More Families in Islamabad and Rawalpindi Are Switching to Desi Eggs
If you've ever cracked open a desi egg next to a regular commercial egg, the difference is immediate — a deeper orange yolk, a richer aroma, and a taste that takes you back to your grandmother's kitchen. But beyond taste, there are real nutritional and ethical reasons why desi eggs are worth choosing — and it starts with what our hens eat.
We Make Our Own Feed
At Eva-Anna Farms, we don't rely on commercial poultry pellets. We formulate our own feed in-house, giving us full control over what goes into every egg. Our hens are supplemented daily with fresh-cut lucerne (alfalfa) — one of the most nutrient-dense forages available — along with seasonal vegetables grown on the farm: spinach, methi, and other greens depending on the harvest.
Lucerne alone is exceptional: it's rich in Vitamin K, Vitamin C, calcium, and plant-based protein. When hens eat it fresh, those nutrients transfer directly into the egg — particularly into the yolk.
Feed Quality → Yolk Quality → Your Health
This is the chain that commercial egg producers break. Factory farms optimise for output, not nutrition. Our approach optimises for what ends up on your plate.
Because our hens eat fresh lucerne and vegetables alongside their home-formulated grain mix, our eggs consistently show:
- Deep orange yolks — a direct marker of high beta-carotene and lutein from green forage
- 2× more Omega-3 fatty acids — from the natural fats in lucerne and fresh greens
- Higher Vitamin D & E — from outdoor access and a varied, natural diet
- More Vitamin K2 — critical for bone health and cardiovascular function, and almost absent in commercial eggs
- Lower inflammatory fats — a better Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio than grain-only fed hens
What Makes a Commercial Egg Different?
Commercial hens are typically fed a standardised grain mix — corn and soy — designed to maximise egg production at minimum cost. There's no fresh forage, no seasonal vegetables, and no farm-specific formulation. The result is a pale yolk, a bland flavour, and a nutritional profile that reflects exactly what the hen was (and wasn't) fed.
The Taste Difference Is Real
Whether you're making a simple anda paratha, a Sunday omelette, or baking a cake, the richness of a properly fed egg is unmistakable. Our customers consistently tell us they can't go back once they've tasted the difference.
